RAC Regulation Activation Capacity
Regulation – Activation – Capacity
When activation becomes greater than our capacity to hold it, we become dysregulated.
At that point, we often move into survival strategies rather than conscious choice.
Some people become anxious and restless.
Others emotionally shut down.
Some over-function, people-please, overthink, or compulsively seek relief through work, food, sex, substances, or constant distraction.
The goal of therapy is not simply to “understand yourself better”.
It is to gradually increase your capacity to remain present with life, emotions, relationships, stress, and uncertainty without becoming overwhelmed or disconnected from yourself.
This is why somatic and trauma-informed psychotherapy can feel different from purely insight-based approaches.
We are not only talking about your experience.
We are also paying attention to what happens in the body, nervous system, emotions, impulses, breathing, tension, and relational patterns in the present moment.
Over time, this can help develop:
greater emotional regulation
more inner steadiness
healthier boundaries
reduced compulsive coping
improved relationships
increased capacity for closeness, rest, and creativity
Therapy is not about becoming perfectly calm all the time.
It is about developing enough capacity that life no longer consistently overwhelms your system.
