Why Insight Alone Is Not Enough: The Missing Piece in Emotional Healing
Many people come to therapy with a good understanding of their difficulties.
They know why they struggle with anxiety.
They understand how childhood experiences have shaped them.
They can explain their patterns in relationships.
Yet despite this insight, they often find themselves repeating the same behaviours.
Why?
Because understanding is not always the same as change.
Insight is valuable. It helps us make sense of our experiences and reduces confusion. However, emotional patterns are not stored only in our thoughts. They are also held in the body, nervous system and emotional responses.
This is why someone can know they are safe, yet still feel anxious.
Why they can understand a relationship is unhealthy, yet still feel drawn back to it.
Why they can recognise a pattern, yet find it difficult to respond differently.
In my work as a trauma and somatic psychotherapist, I often help clients move beyond understanding and into regulation.
A simple way of thinking about this is through the RAC Framework:
Regulation
How grounded, settled and present am I right now?
Activation
How much emotional, physical or psychological energy is moving through me?
Capacity
How much of that energy can I hold without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down?
Many difficulties arise when activation becomes greater than our capacity to hold it.
At those moments we may become anxious, reactive, withdrawn, self-critical or overwhelmed.
Therapy is not only about understanding why this happens. It is also about increasing our capacity to stay present with difficult emotions, sensations and experiences.
As capacity grows, life often feels less overwhelming. We become more able to think clearly, set boundaries, tolerate uncertainty and respond rather than react.
Understanding remains important.
But lasting change often happens when insight is supported by regulation, embodiment and increased capacity.
