When You Feel Stuck, It May Not Be Motivation. It May Be Capacity
One of the biggest misconceptions in personal development is the belief that if we are not moving forward, we simply need more motivation.
In therapy I often see something quite different.
People desperately want to change. They buy books, listen to podcasts, make plans, and genuinely commit to a different way of living. Yet, despite all of that effort, they still feel unable to follow through.
The question is not always, “Why don’t I want to?”
Often the more important question is, “Do I currently have the capacity?”
Capacity is different from motivation.
It is the emotional, physical, mental, relational and even financial space available to engage with life.
When capacity is low, everyday tasks can feel overwhelming. A difficult conversation is avoided. Creative ideas remain unfinished. Relationships receive what’s left over rather than our full presence.
Many people judge themselves harshly during these periods. They assume they are lazy, weak or lacking discipline.
In reality, they may simply be operating with an exhausted nervous system.
This is why regulation matters.
When we learn to regulate ourselves, we gradually recover the energy that has been consumed by anxiety, chronic stress, unresolved emotional pain or survival patterns.
As regulation becomes more consistent, capacity begins to grow.
With greater capacity comes something remarkable.
Life becomes more available.
You have more patience with your children.
You become more present with your partner.
You can sustain meaningful work without becoming depleted.
Creativity returns.
Friendships become easier to maintain.
Challenges remain challenging, but they no longer consume all of your available resources.
Perhaps the goal is not to become stronger by forcing yourself harder.
Perhaps the goal is to build enough capacity that participation in life becomes natural again.
Real healing is not about becoming someone different.
It is about gradually creating enough inner space to participate more fully in the life that already belongs to you.
